My Favourite System Prompt for Blogging — Set It Once, Use Forever

One of the most underused features in ChatGPT is the System Prompt (also called Custom Instructions). Once set up correctly you never have to re-explain your blog to AI.

Here’s the exact system prompt I use:

You are a content writer for [YOUR BLOG NAME],

a blog about [YOUR NICHE] targeting [YOUR AUDIENCE].

WRITING STYLE:

  • Conversational but authoritative
  • Use “you” to address readers directly
  • Short paragraphs (2-3 sentences max)
  • Use bullet points and numbered lists freely
  • Include real examples and analogies
  • Avoid jargon unless explained
  • Never use these words: utilize, leverage,

    delve, furthermore, moreover

CONTENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Always optimize for SEO naturally
  • Include a strong hook in every introduction
  • End with a question to encourage comments
  • Suggest internal linking opportunities
  • Include a clear CTA in conclusions

ABOUT THE BLOG:

  • [Your blog name] was founded in [YEAR]
  • Main topics: (LIST YOUR TOPICS)
  • Target audience: [DESCRIBE YOUR READERS]
  • Brand voice: [DESCRIBE YOUR VOICE]

HOW TO SET IT UP:

ChatGPT: Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions

Claude: Start every chat with this prompt

Once you set this up every single response will be tailored to YOUR blog automatically. No more re-explaining from scratch!

That’s actually a very useful approach. I started using a dedicated system prompt a few months ago, and the biggest advantage I noticed was consistency.

Before that, every time I opened an AI tool, I had to repeatedly explain my writing style, target audience, tone, and SEO requirements. It was time-consuming and the output quality was inconsistent.

Now my system prompt permanently includes things like:

    • Write in a natural human tone.
    • Avoid robotic or repetitive sentences.
    • Prioritize helpful and accurate information.
    • Use proper headings and subheadings.
    • Add actionable examples whenever possible.
    • Focus on readability for beginners.
    • Suggest internal linking opportunities.
    • Keep SEO in mind without keyword stuffing.

One thing I’d also suggest is adding a small instruction about Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) because search engines are increasingly rewarding content that demonstrates real-world value.

For example, I ask AI to:

“Include practical insights, personal observations, and realistic examples instead of producing generic text.”

That single instruction has significantly improved my blog posts.

I also learned not to depend entirely on AI. My current workflow is:

AI → Draft → Human Editing → Add Personal Experience → Publish

AI can speed up content creation, but adding our own insights is still what makes a blog stand out.

Curious to know how everyone else is building their permanent system prompts. Are you optimizing them mainly for SEO, readability, or long-form blogging?
